Investigating and managing nystagmus in the orthoptic clinic

This lecture discusses the aetiology, classification, investigation and management strategies for nystagmus. It includes the assessment of binocular vision, investigating sensory and motor fusion, stereopsis and ocular motor balance in nine positions of gaze grading any EOM restrictions. It will also discuss achieving optimum vision, the importance of the null zone and encouraging compensatory strategies. Finally, the use of prisms and even surgery as management options when abnormal head posture causes significant symptoms will be discussed.
